The Cusco City Tour is ideal for travelers who have just arrived or for those seeking a deeper exploration of the historic Inca capital. Starting at 8:00 AM or 12:50 PM with hotel pickup, the tour begins at Cusco’s main square, the Plaza de Armas. From there, we enjoy a short 10-minute walk through ancient Inca streets to Koricancha, the spectacular Temple of the Sun, where impressive Inca stonework blends harmoniously with colonial architecture.

Next, a comfortable van takes us to the impressive Sacsayhuamán, renowned for its massive Inca stone walls. The journey continues to the enigmatic Qenqo, famous for its sacrificial chambers and sacred passages. We then visit Puca Pucara, the “Red Fortress,” an ancient Inca military and control post, before concluding at the tranquil Tambomachay, celebrated for its ceremonial water fountains where Inca royalty once meditated. The tour returns to Cusco around 12:00 PM for the morning departure or 6:00 PM for the afternoon departure. This leisurely and informative experience offers a fascinating introduction to Cusco’s history and is perfect for acclimating to the altitude while enjoying seamless and comfortable transportation between remarkable archaeological sites.

Itinerary

Cusco – Qoricancha – Saqsayhuaman – Qenqo – Puca Pucara – Tambomachay

This half-day tour is available in the morning or afternoon. Your guide will meet you at your hotel lobby and pick you up in our private transportation. We begin by exploring Cusco’s Main Square, the Plaza de Armas, before enjoying a 10-minute walk to the most important temple of the Inca Empire: the Temple of the Sun, known as Qoricancha (“Golden Enclosure” in Quechua). Here, you’ll observe remarkably preserved Inca architecture and visit smaller temples dedicated to the moon, rainbow, stars, lightning, and thunder. This site offers a fascinating comparison between Inca construction techniques and Spanish colonial architecture, as the Santo Domingo Church was later built directly on top of the original temple. Qoricancha was also the spiritual center of the Inca Empire, from which the four quarters of the empire extended.

From Qoricancha, we walk along Avenida El Sol to board our private transport for a 25-minute drive to the outskirts of Cusco, where we visit the spectacular archaeological site of Sacsayhuamán. This site is famous for its massive stonework, including monoliths weighing up to 200 tons. Although originally a religious site, the Spanish considered it a military fortress due to its strategic location and imposing construction. After your guide’s explanation, you’ll have free time to explore the site on your own.

At the appointed time, we regroup and continue to other nearby archaeological sites. Our next stop is Qenqo (“Labyrinth” or “Zigzag”), an intriguing Inca site carved into natural rock formations. Here, you’ll see steps, seats, geometric reliefs, and a puma-shaped design. The site is believed to represent Andean constellations and the Inca concept of the three worlds, symbolized by sacred animals: the condor, puma, and snake. Some theories suggest it was also used for funerary rituals.

We then take a short five-minute drive to Puca Pucara, a small circular Inca site that once served as a military control post and resting place for travelers arriving from the Amazon. It also helped protect the nearby site of Tambomachay.

Our final stop is Tambomachay, known as the Temple of Water, featuring impressive ceremonial fountains believed to have been used by the Inca elite for ritual bathing. Water played a vital role in Inca spirituality, symbolizing renewal and rejuvenation—hence its association with the legendary “Fountain of Eternal Youth.”

After the visit, we return to Cusco and drop you off at your hotel.
